About the conference

Blue Mountains City Council and the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency are pleased to invite you to attend the 2022 Asbestos Safety and Management Conference, to be held on 19 – 20 May 2022 at the Fairmont Resort & Spa in the UNESCO World Heritage listed Blue Mountains.

This important national event, with a special focus on front line asbestos safety management, will comprise a 2-day conference on 19-20 May, including a series of plenary sessions, workshops and networking activities, as well as optional pre-conference activities held on 18 May. The conference will be a hybrid event, offering delegates the opportunity to either attend in-person or livestream the event.

Every year, an estimated 4,000 Australians die from asbestos-related diseases. This number is four times the annual road toll.

By acting together we can stop further tragic deaths by preventing exposure to asbestos fibres through better management of asbestos in both our built and natural environment.

We look forward to welcoming you

Message from the conference host
Dr Rosemary Dillon – Chief Executive Officer, Blue Mountains City Council

Like many local government organisations, Blue Mountains City Council is responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of ageing infrastructure. Many of our built assets were constructed before 1990 (in some cases, long before that) and contain asbestos.

The safety, health and wellbeing of our community and our employees are of paramount importance and we have worked diligently in recent years to strengthen and improve asbestos management. We have also committed to implementing Workplace Health & Safety strategies that will deliver tangible, long-term benefits.

Throughout Australia there are many organisations who are leading the way in creating new initiatives to improve asbestos management within the built and natural environment. This conference gives you a unique opportunity to learn from these case studies, exchange ideas with your peers, and collaborate with others in the industry.

Together we can continue to strengthen our management of asbestos as we continue to face the challenges of the future.

Message from the conference host
Ms Justine Ross – Chief Executive Officer, Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agnecy

Collaboration between those working on the front line, dealing with asbestos related issues day to day, with those who shape the policies, laws and practices within the asbestos safety management space is essential to ensuring the system can effectively deal with Australia’s asbestos legacy.

The 2022 Asbestos Safety and Management Conference, co-hosted by the Blue Mountains City Council and the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency reflects and facilitates this collaborative approach, and will bring together a diverse range of stakeholders to tackle the complex and multifaceted issues that asbestos creates in our community.

We thank the Blue Mountains City Council for this unique opportunity to co-host this event, and hope that future work, development and progress in this space will harness this same notion. We look forward to welcoming you to this event and sharing with you a program that covers the multifaceted, cross-agency and industry nature of the asbestos safety management system.

How we’re keeping you COVID-19 safe

The conference will be a ‘hybrid’ event, offering an in-person event plus a virtual event component through a dedicated conference platform, which will run simultaneously.

If COVID-19 restrictions are tightened before the conference, it will go ahead as a completely virtually event.

COVID-19 Safe practices in place for the event at the venue:

  • Wider spacing of seats during the conference.
  • Regular cleaning and hand sanitiser stations.
  • Delegates observing social distancing at all times.

Hybrid Event

Both our in-person and online delegates will be connected virtually in real time via OnAir, a dedicated virtual conferencing platform built by Australian company EventsAir.

OnAIR provides a rich interactive experience that is easy to use, comfortable and engaging for both presenters and attendees alike. Watch a video explaining how OnAIR works.

You can watch the presentations and workshops in real time and interact by asking questions and leaving comments on the OnAIR portal. You can also view the Virtual Exhibition and network with others in the Meeting Hub.

You can register now for either the in-person conference or for the Virtual Conference. Register early so you don’t miss out.
